Budai in Chinese, or Hotei in Japanese, referred to as the Laughing Buddha, Happy Buddha, or Fat Buddha in English. Budai historically is thought to have been an 11th century Buddhist monk, and is considered a folk deity throughout the Far East. Symbolizing generosity and felicity, and carrying a bag of plenty, traditionally his bag of plenty was miraculously full, no matter how much he distributed to the poor.
