Featherbeds
Featherbeds, extremely popular in Europe, are often misunderstood and overlooked by American sleepers. Featherbeds are placed on top of the mattress either under or on top of the fitted sheet. They provide an unparalleled layer of comfort by cushioning and cradling your body. Here are a few simple tips to help you choose a featherbed so you can begin to enjoy its luxurious comfort.
1. Check the construction.
There are three basic constructions for featherbeds. The most popular is the "baffle box" construction, in which boxes with fabric walls keep the feathers in place and allow maximum loft and support. The "baffle channel" construction is when the fabric is sewn in "channels" that allow the feathers to loft while minimizing shifting. The "bag of feathers" style has no internal compartments to keep feathers in place, usually resulting in the feathers shifting to the outside corners and providing less support and comfort.
2. Check the cover.
A high-thread count cotton cover is essential for keeping the feathers inside the featherbed. A tightly woven cotton cover of 200 thread count or higher is generally sufficient to prevent leakage.
3. Find the fill.
Most featherbeds are filled with a blend white goose feathers and white goose down. If you are allergic to feathers, look for feathers that have been washed using an extensive process to remove dust, dirt and allergens.
